The Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center
Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.

The Medical Fundraising staff at Georgetown University contracted with Reeder & Co. to provide a capstone printed piece to assist in fundraising efforts for the nationally renowned Lombardi Cancer Center.

Georgetown University, just completing a major capital campaign, had hired a new director for the Lombardi. Because fundraising efforts had been suspended during the search, the Center needed a major piece to share with potential donors outside a capital campaign environment. Because the needs were not "comprehensive," a traditional case statement, which outlines the case for support of individual goals, was thought to be inappropriate for this effort.

After on-site consultations and research, Reeder & Co. created the concept and directed the completion of the printed piece, in concert with on-campus staff. The piece, a book of full-page portraits, features senior researchers, cancer-patient survivors, and professional athletes [also cancer survivors] who have received Lombardi awards. The elaborate brochure opens with the new director's vision statement and includes brief descriptions of important cancer research at Lombardi.

By focusing on researchers and survivors, the impact of Lombardi's work becomes clear without reliance on scientific mumbo-jumbo.

The piece, entitled "Champions: Portraits from the Lombardi Family" serves as a general fundraising tool that may be customized for any specific donor proposal.

Reeder & Co. art directed the photography on campus and in four U.S. cities to capture images of the professional athletes: world-champion ice-skater Scott Hamilton, Hall of Fame quarterback Len Dawson, New York Yankees manager Joe Torre, and P.J. Cooksey, the first woman jockey to compete in the Preakness.
